Weight loss Tip #1 is: Use Your Willpower to Develop Habits (Not to Resist Temptations)
When it comes to weight loss, your willpower IS important…but not for the reason most people think. Most people think that the purpose of willpower is to resist temptations.
For example, if you open the fridge and see a carton of ice cream, most people think you need to use your willpower to resist that ice cream.
The problem here is that your willpower is a limited resource. Like a muscle. And like a muscle, your willpower gets tired if you use it too much.
This about it like this: you can do push-ups for a little while, but you can’t do push-ups forever…right? Sooner or later your arms are gonna get tired.
It’s the same thing with your willpower. You can resist it for a little while, but sooner or later your willpower is gonna get tired…and the next thing you know, you’re going to be in a Ben & Jerry’s coma.
So, what should you do? How do you solve this problem?
The Massive (Secret) Power of Habits
The secret is developing HABITS.
This is what successful dieters do. Instead of trying to resist that ice cream over and over again, they use their willpower to create a habit that effectively ELIMINATES the ice cream problem for good.
There are all kinds of habits that could accomplish this goal, such as:
- Developing the habit of shopping with a grocery list (and you can only buy what’s on the list)
- Develop the habit of eating before you go to the grocery store (so you won’t be hungry & tempted to buy ice cream)
- Develop the habit of NOT buying ice cream at the store (just make it a forbidden purchase)
- Develop the habit of going out for ice cream instead of buying a whole gallon (so you never have leftovers at home)
All of these could work—you just need to pick the habit that would best for YOU and your unique lifestyle.
And the reason this is so powerful is because… After it becomes a habit, then you won’t NEED to use your willpower anymore. You won’t be buying ice cream anymore. You won’t even have to think about it. And that means you won’t HAVE to resist ice cream.
This is what successful dieters do, and it’s a strategy I highly recommend for YOU if you want to lose weight successfully and keep it off for years to come.
